Goals
- increase the competitive game level of players tennis performance in all main parts of its structure that can be influenced by training (technical skills, tactics, psychological strength, physical fitness)
- basic idea is to increase variety of options in shot selection and improve physical abilities in order to use other skills
- not changing small mistakes, but mostly eliminating biggest weaknesses and improve the use of player’s weapons or strengths
- learn defensive skills and how to keep the ball in play effectively
Main Idea
Maybe some people have already heard the term “Winning Ugly”. Well, let’s discover the true meaning of this saying, which also stands as a title of the book by famous American tennis player and tennis coach Brad Gilbert, who has been teaching such tennis players as Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.
What Brad Gilbert basically says is also a motto of this tennis program: “It is not a big miracle to win a match when everything is going smoothly and you are on, but only the best can win when they struggle and everything turns against them!” There are only few occasions when you are on the top of your form and game, but usually there are many circumstances in your way. Being able to cope with those and fight against them is something we want to teach you

- Intensive conditioning training focused on endurance (strength in endurance)
- conditioning practice that is closely related to tennis, because tennis is a “running game” described as a combination of short sprints (sub maximum physical activity) during a rally and short periods of rest between the points; conditioning practice consists of drills in which we want to keep sub maximum physical activity during a long period of time with short breaks simulating a tennis match
- Long drills at average to semi high frequency (keeping the ball in play as long as possible)
- during these drills we focus on being able to hit the ball into the court even though the physical exhaustion comes in play
- Court coverage, footwork and anticipation focused practice (defensive shot drills on a stretch)
- technical practice that is putting stress on proper feet movement (eliminating unnecessary movement and increase the efficiency of feet motion); during these drills we focus on three things:
1. being able to react quickly to the opponents shot
2. being able to choose the most effective way to get ourselves to the position prior to hitting the ball
3. being able to hit the ball into the court even though we are under pressure, attack or in a difficult play situation
- Point play and offensive shot drills (finishing the point of at the right time)
- this doesn’t only mean a technical practice of hitting a winner or finishing the point of, but we also put the stress on learning when to go for these shots in order to increase the effectiveness o players’ offensive game
- Counter-attack training (transaction from defense to offense)
- Technical practice focused on two alternatives:
1. Ability to hit a winner while being under attack or in the defensive position
2. Work the way out of the defense and continuous transition into offense
